Have fun and keep track of your expenses with these free events happening around Phoenix this week. Immerse yourself in the world of children’s literature in Scottsdale, where you can see works from the private art collections of two retired librarians in the Pictures Tell Stories: Children’s Book Illustrations exhibit in a gallery space at the Scottsdale Civic Center Library. 3839 North Drinkwater Boulevard, Scottsdale. It’s a great way to add a little nostalgia to your life, revive some of your own memories of beloved books or authors, and learn about the work of accomplished artists in the field of children’s literature. Look for work by Tempe artist Molly Idle for Flora and the Flamingo and work by Tucson artist Adam Rex for Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich. The exhibition includes illustrations from Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story, Drum Dream Girl, One Night in the Coral Sea, Bedtime Bunnies, and many more. The gallery is open during the library opening hours, which are open on Wednesday, August 18, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Consider bringing a sketchbook and some colored pencils in case you’re after seeing these quirky works of art. Lynn Trimble Spooky Season is almost here, but October is there before you know it, and soon places from the ubiquitous Spirit Halloween retail concept will be popping up everywhere (there’s even one in the old Barneys room now). Just north of Phoenix, the Desert Ridge location at 21001 North Tatum Boulevard will host a grand opening party on Thursday, August 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. UZA MysCreation Haunted Attraction, a local Halloween attraction, will bring some of their monsters to the events and give away vouchers for this year’s edition. Happy haunted everyone. Luxicon Photography The Way Back Sessions Live music is definitely back, and there’s nothing like watching some of Phoenix’s top talent rock at a local venue. But you might want to stay on Thursday August 19th to see a show and meet one of the best bands in town. The Way Back Sessions, a YouTube series that combines a live concert with musician interviews, is kicking off its second season with local favorites (and former Best of Phoenix winners) Wyves. Tune in at 7pm to see frontman Corey Gloden and the rest of the band blow up the studio with their rock ‘n’ roll in real time. You can also interact with other fans and ask questions to the band in the live chat. Jennifer Goldberg click to enlarge Phinger Phest Local bands come and go, but Dephinger’s underdogs have been on the Phoenix scene for more than two decades. When the scrap rock band formed in 2000, their MO consisted of “basically getting as wasteful and sucking as possible” while poorly playing bastardized arena rock and spitting out lyrics that would make GG Allin blush . Dephinger has changed things over the years (including moving to a more punk sound, some line-up changes, and the occasional pause), but they still have a yen for playing loud, fast-paced, disgusting rock. They do this again during Phinger Phest on Friday August 20 and Saturday August 21 at Chopper John’s, 2547 East Indian School Road. Dephinger will headline both nights of the event, which will also include sets from Phoenix Hooker Cops, Quantum Colossus, Sewer Gap, Loserfur, The Declaimed, Psycloptopus, Bee Keeper and TV Tragedy. The music starts at 9 p.m. and entry is free. Benjamin Leatherman click to enlarge See Jennifer Bailey’s artwork in “Off the Clock” at the Vision Gallery in Chandler. Vision Gallery ‘Off the Clock’ Most people enter art museums and galleries with the assumption that all of the creativity in their midst is hanging on the walls around them. But exhibitions of work by staff, which are regularly held at places like the Phoenix Art Museum, show that people working behind the scenes often spend time creating their own pieces of art. Case in point: The new Off the Clock exhibition at Vision Gallery, 10 East Chicago Street, Chandler. The gallery features artwork by more than two dozen city employees, including Peter Bugg, Cynde Cerf, Savana Martinez, and Michaal Winer. Together they work for 11 municipal departments. But here you can see the art they bring to life in their free time. Like other exhibitions the gallery has presented over the years, the exhibition encompasses a fascinating variety of media, themes, and styles. Free entry. Be one of the first to get a good look on Saturday, August 21st, when the Vision Gallery is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, could just be one of the Valley’s many talented emerging artists.
