Here are five places to start, whether you’re into the visual, performing, or literary arts. Mesa Arts Center 1 East Main Street, Mesa Mesa Arts Center offers face-to-face and virtual courses in visual, performing, and literary arts. The center has an Arts in Service program with courses for veterans and service members, as well as workshops for military spouses. The virtual art offering in autumn includes courses in ceramics, drawing and painting, glass, jewelry and metals, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Fall offers for personal tuition include printmaking with Ron Brimrose, stained glass with Troy Moody, welding with Matt Smith, and pottery wheels with Jesse Armstrong. The Phoenix Center for the Arts offers in-person and virtual classes, including some in Spanish, in two locations. The line-up includes visual, literary, and performing arts – as well as Arts for Change, which explores the intersection of art and social justice. They even have some courses that are offered outdoors. In the fall, courses in fine arts are offered in a variety of media, including ceramics, drawing and painting, glass, metal, photography, and printmaking. Virtual classes include an introduction to theater writing with Jessica Marie Fisher, an introduction to watercolor with Koryn Woodward Wasson, color theory with Edna Dapo, and more. Scottsdale Artists ‘School 3720 North Marshall Way, Scottsdale The Scottsdale Artists’ School offers in-person and virtual classes in a variety of visual arts, including drawing, painting, and sculpture. The fall program includes color mixes with Renee Palmer-Jones, expressive colors in characters and still lifes with Henry Stinson, illustrated letters with Jane Barton and water-based media with Antonio Masi. You can study oil painting for a week during Oil Painters of America Week in October. Shemer Art Center 5005 East Camelback Road The Shemer Art Center offers in-person and virtual classes in various types of visual arts, including bookmaking, ceramics, collage, drawing and painting, mixed media, and pottery. The fall program includes artist books with Ludmila Demich, colored pencil techniques with Elliott Everson, mixed media and collage with Sue Hunter, graphic arts (screen printing, gravure, woodcut and linoleum printing) with Larry Nisula and urban sketching with John Erwin. Amy Guerrero Sunshine Craft Co 700 West Campbell Avenue Sunshine Craft Co offers face-to-face and virtual workshops on a variety of crafts, including macrame, color pouring, and printmaking. Owner Amy Guerrero publishes a different schedule each month and often includes additional offerings like brass Himmeli wreath making and calligraphy. The studio also sells craft kits for those who prefer to get creative at home or in other settings. If you like macrame, you have several great choices, including making small or large wall hangings. In some cases workshops last more than a single session.
