Chicago took advantage of a 6-0 run and an even score again to take a six-point lead, surpassed by six points each from Kahleah Copper and Candace Parker.

Sophie Cunningham, who has returned from a calf injury, hit two 3-pointers to give Chicago the lead. 23-20

Britteny Griner took the first 10 points of the Mercury, including a dun.

She was on a different level this season. She really plays some of the best basketball of her career. A big part of that is the fact that she left the bubble early and didn’t play overseas, which gave Griner her longest break from basketball since college.

Griner said she focused on therapy this off-season, and Sandy Brondello said that from talking to Griner during the off-season, she knew that Griner would enter this season with an intense and renewed focus. Of course we’ll see that early this evening. She shot 5 out of 6 in the first quarter.

Cunningham’s return cannot be underestimated. It adds another external presence to Phoenix and gives them additional space. You can already see that this has an impact on the Mercury as an additional player. She has 6 early points and brings a helping of energy.
