Cybertronic Spree October is always a month full of geeky activities and mostly has something to do with Halloween. There are costumes to plan, haunted houses to try out and spooky films to watch on TV. All in all, there’s more than just Halloween-themed things to do on Metro Phoenix this month, including events featuring battles against dinosaurs, a Transformers-themed metal band, a full moon party, and a performance by Monty Python co-founder John Cleese . If you’re looking for some scary stuff we have that too. There’s the annual Fearcon, a Halloween art show, and a film festival that shows some scary movies. click to enlarge Dinosaur smackdowns await at Jurassic Fight Night. Gila River Arena Jurassic Fight Night Jurassic Fight Night is like the battles you played your plastic dinosaurs in as a kid, only on a larger scale. The event – which includes Arthur Conan Doyle’s equal parts The Lost World, Robot Wars and UFC (with a bit of WWE-style spectacle) arrives at the Gila River Arena, 9400 West Maryland Avenue, in Glendale on Friday. On October 8th and Saturday, October 9th, animatronic dinosaurs like Steve “The Spinecrusher” Spinosaurus, Rex “The Carnivore King” and Rowdy Roddy Raptor will fight fierce in a boxing / wrestling ring. In the course of the evening, several fights of three two-minute rounds will be played, with the overall winner receiving a dinosaur-size championship belt. Too many punches are unlikely to be thrown (due to the tiny arm spans of most competitors), but many bites, kicks, and tail slaps are likely to occur. The fights take place on Friday at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $ 24.75 to $ 94.75. Apocalypse Later International Fantastic Film Festival People who like spooky and exciting movies as well as independent cinema can enjoy these activities at the Apocalypse Later International Fantastic Film Festival from Friday October 8th to Sunday October 11th at the Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 North Third Street. According to organizer Hal Astell, it is a genre film festival that features a mix of horror, sci-fi, action, fantasy and cult films. This is the fifth edition of the festival and its first in-person event in a couple of years due to the pandemic. A total of eight full-length films (including What Doesn’t Kill Us, A Feral Package and The Basement) and 63 short films will be shown over the weekend. The festival starts at 11am each day and general admission is $ 60 and student admission is $ 30. More details and a full schedule can be found here. Tickets are $ 30, $ 50 daily -Dollars for the weekend or $ 75 for VIP entry The Cybertronic Spree in the Rebel Lounge This costumed hard rock band is aimed at fans of the old school cartoon The Transformers and its 1986 adaptation. Halloween Anime Fest Anime fans who haven’t had their fill at Saboten Con last month can head to the Collectors Marketplace, 1945 East Indian School Road, this afternoon’s Extravaganza on Saturday, October 23rd. A cosplay competition will be held and prizes will be held while live performances and events are held on a stage. Various local geek creatives will also exhibit and sell their work along an artist alley. Anyone who wants to make it through can check out this Halloween version of the Epic Toy Show on Saturday October 30th at the El Zaribah Shrine Auditorium, 552 North 40th Street. Dozens of vendors will attend, selling a variety of classic and modern toys, games, and collectibles. The quality and quantity of the items will of course vary, although there are likely to be some rare gems to be found. During Halloween week, the vendors will be handing out candy to trick or treating and the organizers are running a costume contest for children at 3 p.m. Hours of operation are 9 am to 4 pm from 10 am for 3 USD and children in costume from 1 pm to 4 pm free Ghoul Gallery More than 20 local artists will be at this pop-up gallery for one night in the old Deer-O building in the 2431 East Van Buren Street on Saturday October 30th. The works on display will be of a strange, creepy, or bizarre nature, and the line-up includes names like Derk Harkin, Brad Dwyer, Luster Kaboom, TC Fenwick, Angela Nimmo, Stephanie Wilkins, Mckenna Harron, and Cassie Stys. The short film Through The Eyes of A Ghost will also be premiered at the event. Opening times are from 5pm to 10pm. Admission is free.
